Julia R. Masterman School
Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School is a middle and senior high school serving culturally diverse, academically talented students in grades 5-12, and operates as a special admissions school. Students come from all regions of the city primarily from public schools, but also from non-public schools. There are approximately 1,150 students enrolled in 36 homerooms.
Masterman is the most highly ranked school in the School District of Philadelphia and scores at the highest level on the Pennsylvania System of Statewide Assessment. In both 2008 and 2009 Masterman was ranked in the top 60 schools in the United States. In 1998 and 2010, Masterman was selected as a Blue Ribbon School for Educational Excellence on the National Level. Masterman teachers are “demonstration” teachers who are expected to provide an enriched and accelerated curriculum and to support students’ involvement in curriculum-related activities.
Masterman challenges each student intellectually and fosters the development of the whole individual. When students have completed the Masterman educational program students are expected to be able to think critically; communicate knowledge through speaking and writing; understand different cultures and perspectives; be respectful members of a community demonstrating integrity and personal responsibility; utilize good study habits and research skills; succeed in advanced academic curriculum including a foreign language; have an appreciation for literature and the arts; understand and apply mathematical concepts to solve problems in daily living; understand scientific applications in the context of the environment; apply historical knowledge to contemporary events; be technologically literate; adopt a healthy lifestyle; be lifelong, self-directed learners and active citizens in a participatory democracy.
