General George A. McCall Elementary and Middle School

Located in Center City’s beautiful Society Hill neighborhood, General George A. McCall Elementary and Middle School (McCall) is a highly-regarded public school. The student body boasts an enviable mix of ethnicities, drawing students from local neighborhoods such as Society Hill, Washington Square West, Old City, and Chinatown.

McCall has been honored during the past six years by being named a Vanguard School. In addition, 80% of McCall graduates attend magnet and select admission high schools such as Central, Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA), Academy at Palumbo, Bodine High School for International Affairs, Carver High School for Engineering and Science, Girard Academic Music Program (GAMP) and Science Leadership Academy.

Academic excellence at McCall has been fostered by an effective administration. Principal Carol Domb ensures that motivated teachers, diverse curriculum and technology work together to facilitate learning. McCall provides a broad curriculum including the core curriculum, complemented by art, music, gym, computer lab, and problem-solving classes. McCall’s cybrary models educational technology at its best. The cybrary is a research center complete with interactive smart board, laptops, video conferencing and production capability, and small and large group instructional areas. All classrooms in the school are equipped with interactive smart boards.

School Community

McCall’s Home & School Association (HSA) actively participates in the school community. Since 2005, the McCall HSA has raised more than $200,000, which has helped to build the cybrary, acquire smart boards, purchase books for the 100-Book Challenge Reading Program, and fund many other projects benefiting the students. In 2009, McCall celebrated its 100-year anniversary, and the HSA began a “Science is Elementary” campaign to enhance the science curriculum for its students. McCall alumni and parents raised the needed initial funds, and community partners’ generous contributions enabled McCall to upgrade the science lab in 2011. Most recently, the HSA implemented the “Playworks” program, through which a dedicated coach organizes games and structured play during recess, teaches complementary physical education classes, and coordinates intramural sports teams as extracurricular activities. McCall also offers various after-school clubs and activities in partnership with the After School Activities Program. These include: Chess Club, Scrabble Club, Yoga Club, Yearbook, Drama Club (performs a musical every year), Lego Club, and Competitive Cup Stacking Club.

Community Partnerships

McCall’s location in the heart of Center City affords a multitude of partnership opportunities that broaden and enrich our students in their formative school years. Community partners, both profit and non-profit organizations participate in a reading STARS program for one-on-one literacy support to students, provide tickets for theatrical and musical performances, class trips to historical sites, and funding for books and equipment. Some of McCall’s community partners include ACE, Arden Theatre, Dow Chemical, Independence Seaport Museum, Kimmel Center, NLRB, 6th District Philadelphia Police Department, Walnut Street Theatre, and Washington Square West Trust. Currently, McCall School, community representatives, and the Community Design Collaborative are working together on a concept plan to beautify the outside space of McCall’s school grounds.
