Chester A. Arthur School

Chester A. Arthur School is a small K-8 school located in beautiful southwest Center City. The neighborhood is experiencing significant development and population growth with many refurbished and new townhomes, condominiums, restaurants and other amenities offering young families an opportunity to experience urban living at its best. As the community becomes more diverse, Arthur School seeks to marry the school with the neighborhood, providing an excellent educational choice for families in the area.

Arthur’s seasoned, dedicated staff provides an exciting educational experience every day for students in a safe and supportive environment. We provide all students with the educational tools needed to be productive and engaged learners. When our students succeed, we all succeed; when they fail, we have failed. Working with parents and the community as partners in education, Arthur provides the necessary tools for students to become life-long learners.

Arthur graduates attend many of the select admission high schools including: The School of the Future, Central High School, Science Leadership Academy, Carver Engineering and Science, Philadelphia High School for Business and Technology, Saul High School for Agricultural Sciences, Paul Robeson High School for Human Services, Parkway Center City High School and Dobbins Technical High School. The neighborhood high school is Audenried.

School Community

Arthur’s campus features three separate courtyards for recreation and a community garden. Mural Arts partnered with the school to create nature-themed murals in the courtyards. The children enjoyed participating in the artistic process, and continue to benefit from the beauty of the murals as they play and learn in the courtyard spaces. In 2012, Arthur received a new playground in the schoolyard due to the generosity of AmeriHealth Keystone Mercy, Wells Fargo, the Friends of Chester Arthur and the support of the neighborhood. There are currently plans underway to turn the rest of the schoolyard into more play and learning space and a community park.

Arthur students benefit from Spanish, art, physical education and computer instruction daily. Arthur also boasts a technology lab and a science lab that enhance the educational experience for students. The school is proud to have technology present in every classroom with Promethean boards, and all teachers have received training on how to use them.

There are an array of activities and programs available at Chester Arthur that include clubs such as robotics and civil engineering and in-school and/or after school opportunities in art, drama, music, Spanish, dance and computer technology. The student body shares in a Multi-Cultural Day celebration and student recognition assemblies. Tutoring and mentoring programs are always in action.

Community Partnerships

Chester Arthur was chosen as one of 11 public and charter schools in the Philadelphia area to be adopted by Wells Fargo. Wells Fargo and its neighborhood branches provide services and resources to its adopted schools, including enhancements to the school grounds, providing financial literacy and early childhood training and the funding of several in-school art partnerships.

The Eagle Eye Van visits the school to provide vision screenings to the students.

Shiloh Baptist Church provides volunteers and support in the classrooms.

Friends of Chester Arthur provides support in a variety of ways to the school including tutoring and mentoring, fundraising for the playground, school supplies, after-school program, and much more.

Arthur School also enjoys a productive partnership with the Free Library, Walnut Street Theatre, Friends of Chester Arthur, South of South Neighborhood Association, Christian Street YMCA and Drexel University’s Eat.Right.Now nutrition program.
