Bache-Martin School

Bache-Martin Elementary School is located in the Fairmount section of Center City Philadelphia. Adjacent to the Art Museum and the Schuylkill River, the Fairmount community is a wonderful place to raise a family. With easy access to many of the City’s indoor and outdoor assets, including Fairmount Park and the bicycle paths along Kelly Drive, Boathouse Row, the Franklin Institute, Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, Central Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Barnes Foundation, and the Please Touch Museum, residents are only a short walk or drive away from a host of cultural and natural attractions.

Capitalizing upon the proximity of these resources, the school enriches the core curriculum with an emphasis on the arts and healthy living, structured within a project-based learning approach. Through the involvement in real-world projects, use of technology, and collaboration with community and corporate partners, Bache-Martin offers students a uniquely rich educational environment.

Each classroom is equipped with a Promethean board and computers, and mobile laptop carts are available for whole classroom use. Additionally, the school has a computer lab furnished with 30 brand new Apple desktop computers through a Spring 2012 GEAR UP grant. A brand new library was completed in Fall 2011, and students learn to use technology to aid their research and learning.

Approximately 50% of Bache Martin students attend magnet and select admit high schools including: Central, Masterman, Science Leadership Academy, Bodine, Girls High, Academy at Palumbo, Franklin Learning Center, and GAMP. The neighborhood high school is Benjamin Franklin.

School Community

The campus features two buildings, one of which is a magnificent historic structure with domes and courtyards. Through a 2007 Campus Parks grant, one of the interior courtyards in the Martin Building was renovated to make an inviting and safe play space for the children. They installed a soft play surface as well as extensive landscaping, and the area is used throughout the day for recess and recreation. The other interior courtyard has been transformed with the assistance of the Coca-Cola Scholars into an Outdoor Learning Lab to provide students with hands-on learning experiences. In Fall 2011, the school completed a Greening Master Plan with the assistance of the Community Design Collaborative. The Greening Committee continues to execute action items from the Plan, and was awarded $3,000 from Recyclebank’s Green Schools program in Spring 2012 to install bicycle racks around the school.
